Review of Nokia XpressMusic 5310

Having had a Samsung D410, which had given me a lot of company for 4 long years, I decided to move onto a newer phone.
I was looking for a phone that would have the following features in it:
serve as a good quality mobile phone
  • Have a lot of memory so that I could use this instead of an ipod
  • be able to listen to the radio and a lot of songs
  • Have a good battery life
  • Be stylish
  • Have a good camera, 2 mega pixels and above that I could use to take impromptu photos
  • Be good value for money
After searching around for a lot of time, I happened to glance into the Nokia Xpress Music 5310 model, And yes before I could say voila I was owning the latest handset in the market, with red bordering :)

Now comes the time for listing the pro's and the con's of this mobile phone

The con's are as follows :
  • Very un-reliable, tends to reboot often
  • Sudden hang up and reboot when you are in a call
  • The point of inseting the recharge pin, is not convincing, the pin does not go in completly, feels loose and dangly
  • If you happen to completely exhaust your battery and recharge it, the first 3 calls that you get, you might be facing the reboot all of a sudden
  • does not support rm format
  • comes with only 1 GB of memory in the card
  • In built memory in the phone is not enough for a phone touted as a music phone (30 MB)
  • documentation does not specify the video formats supported
  • No flash in the phone, no use in night shots
  • In case of a fall, scratches and broken items galore
  • Over reliance - over use of the center ok key in the keyboard, might lead to easy wear-out
  • nokia advertises 18 hours of music play. In my moderate use of the music player, I run out of battery steam by 9 - 10 hours of playing
  • I have to recharge the battery once every 3-4 days
  • No extra battery
  • No bluetooth headset like the one that is present in MotoRokr, that would have helped immensely
  • If you have a list in the menu, clicking on the numbers does not select the menu according to the number, you will have to click the central key always to select the same

The pro's

  • Super vibrator, can feel the vibrator through the thickest of fabric/jacket
  • Super fast loading of Operating System
  • As soon as the Operating System, you will be able to immediately call up any of your contacts (A marked difference from my earlier Samsung D410)
  • Music player rocks !!!
  • can play wma and mp3 with amr formats
  • 2 Mega pixel camera, that has decent output in lighted places
  • Ultra Slim,
  • Weight is less, put in your pocket and forget it exists until some one calls you up
  • 2000 contacts in memory
  • Can assign different ringtones and details to your contacts
  • Dedicated music keys, for your music
  • Bluetooth based transfer is good
  • Good speakers in built
  • The joystick keys can be re-programmed to access what you need

The Verdict:

If you are looking for a mobile phone that doubles up as a music player, look for some other phone.

Well compiled list..!
Initially i too thought the phone was great, but it still seriously cannot stand wear and tear. Most of the pieces in the market are Dubai-Manufactured, which automatically means that they're low on hardware quality. It's too fragile, if you just keep it in your jeans and sit down, your keypad might stop working.!

The speakers that came with it were good though. Now I am using it with my laptop.!
